The Aquaculture Program Manager will support CI’s efforts to advance global commitments to environmental sustainability and social responsibility in the seafood sector and will further support a range of programmatic needs and initiatives in CI’s Global Fisheries and Aquaculture Program. They join a growing fisheries and aquaculture team in CI’s Center for Oceans and will work closely with a range of partners and divisions at CI, including CI-Ventures, the Center for Sustainable Lands and Waters, the Natural Climate Solutions team, the Conservation Finance Division, the Moore Science Center, and CI’s diverse and vibrant field programs in the Asia-Pacific, Americas, and Africa regions.
They play a key and visible role in supporting the delivery of aquaculture sustainability initiatives through strong, interdisciplinary science, working to:
- Implement aquaculture and food system sustainability initiatives, developed by CI’s country teams, CI’s Center for Oceans, and the broader community of practice in seafood sustainability, facilitating the scaling of initiatives and the collective transition towards environmentally and socially responsible production,
- Manage interdisciplinary research on aquaculture topics (often utilizing analytical tools from a diversity of disciplines, including environmental science, biology, finance, economics, and public policy) and publish findings in reports and peer-reviewed journals; and
- Foster key partnerships across environmental organizations, seafood production, and supply chain businesses, pre-competitive platforms, and financial institutions, in addition to supporting the CI’s Global Fisheries and Aquaculture Program’s diverse conservation initiatives in coastal community fisheries, Pacific tuna, and social responsibility - supporting program growth and organizational effectiveness, including project implementation, internal and external communications, development and fundraising, and other tasks.
They continuously represent CI to engage, influence, and cultivate partnerships with key external stakeholders including government officials, businesses, NGOs, donors, and other parties critical to program success. As appropriate, they build and leverage strategic alliances with NGOs, businesses, or other entities that can further CI’s mission.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Implementation
- Execute the shared development of science-based guidelines, tools, and other program-related support to improve the aquaculture sector.
- Support stakeholder initiatives to co-develop and execute aquaculture improvement programs informed by science-based guidelines and local and external expertise.
- Facilitate and create interdisciplinary research projects on critical questions in aquaculture sustainability.
- Implement science-based assessments in the field, assessing environmental and social performance of aquaculture and other ocean conservation initiatives, working collaboratively with CI country teams and external partners.
- Manage, facilitate and support the communication and dissemination of results and lessons learned from aquaculture initiatives through diverse mechanisms, such as peer-reviewed publications, public-facing websites, conference and workshop presentations, and other activities, ensuring CI’s blue production program is recognized internally and externally.
- Manage impact evaluation protocols and measurement for CI’s Blue Production aquaculture program and aquaculture-related projects in other CI programs, including measuring the human and environmental impact of specific initiatives, through evidence-based assessment and preparation of impact reports and other communication materials.
Partnership Development
- Implement aquaculture and ocean sustainability initiatives developed and implemented by CI country teams, CI’s Center for Oceans, and the external community of practice in sustainable seafood production, by sharing resources and knowledge, and through frequent communication.
- Foster and maintain partnerships with key organizations, businesses, and alliances, through the development of MOUs and other material, workshop, and meeting attendance, participation in working group calls, and through frequent communication.
Represent CI at key conferences and meetings, and advance and influence stakeholder understanding and support through the development of proactive communication materials, publications, and other outreach products.
Fundraising and Program Management
- Together with the Director of Aquaculture, Center for Oceans leadership, and CI development staff, support fundraising efforts for the program, including through the development of LOIs, concept notes, full proposals (including budget and narrative components), and grant reports.
- Manage reporting to donors to ensure it accurately reflects the work completed for the support offered.
- Support the implementation of CI’s Global Fisheries and Aquaculture Program (“Blue Production”) strategy, objectives, work plans and impact metrics.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Local and/or international travel of 25% or more, sometimes in difficult travel conditions.
- Ability to work in remote locations or under difficult working conditions.
- Flexibility in work schedule in order to accommodate time differences among HQ, regions and field programs.
- Guidance on flexible work arrangements will be shared during the interview process.
- For UK/Europe candidates: “Candidates should be EU or UK nationals or have a valid work permit for France or in the UK.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- B.A./B.S. in environmental science, biology, economics, aquaculture science, or related discipline, with 4 to 6 years of relevant experience, including supervisory experience with interns and contractors.
- Excellent technical and analytical skills, including demonstrated experience in research design, data analysis, development of policy solutions/interventions, and communication of results (including reports, popular press articles, publication in peer-reviewed journals, policy briefs, and other outputs).
- Experience integrating social science, natural science, and local knowledge to inform conservation and development policies.
- Experience in project management and budget development.
- Superb oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with diverse teams across many regions of the world and engage staff in carrying out program strategies and objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to function as an agent of change, and to support strategy implementation.
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, with proven ability to turn vision and strategies into outcomes.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement, and building strong partnerships across academic, public and private sectors, and civil society.
- Proven ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Adept at working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities with limited supervision.
Preferred
- M.A./M.S. in environmental science, biology, economics, aquaculture science, or related discipline.
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders around challenges in natural resource use.
- Experience writing for peer-reviewed science publications.
- Experience with fundraising.
- Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in a second language is preferred.
